Tomatoes and onions are popular ingredients used in a variety of dishes. Here are a couple of handy tips that will make easy recipes even easier:
- How do you cut an onion without crying? Use a sweet onion where possible, and peel and cut it under running water or chop it near a gas flame. Refrigerating onions before chopping can also reduce the volatility of the sulfide that causes the irritation.
- If you really don’t fancy the strong taste of onion, you can use cabbage for a similar taste – especially in Indian recipes such as curries.
- Place overripe tomatoes in cold water, add some salt and leave overnight. They will be fresh and firm to the touch the next day.
- Spoon tomato paste into ice cube trays. Freeze overnight then transfer into plastic bags and leave in your freezer. Frozen cubes can be dropped right into curries and other delicious dishes any time.
