Prickly pears & pomegranates: Local, organic and seasonal food from the plains of Camdeboo won Best Local Cookbook in the World earlier this year – at the GOURMAND World Cookbook Awards in Paris.
With delectable illustrations by talented photographer Craig Fraser, this book contains a number of ancient recipes passed down through six generations on the farm Cranemere in the Great Karoo.
The Palmer women on Cranemere farm knew the importance of cooking in accordance with the season and has shaped a culinary tradition in which the art of creative improvisation is paramount.
The recipes are rustic and wonderful, and each chapter is a tribute to certain ingredients. Recipes include guineafowl pie, pot-roasted chicken and a dessert of crushed pomegranate seeds with rose water.
