How to Boil an Egg

August 21, 2009 by Louise

One of the most versatile ingredients used in cooking, eggs are also great just on their own. Because of its high protein content, a boiled egg on toast is a great way to kick off your day. Follow these easy step-by-step instructions to boil your egg, soft or hard, to perfection.

  1. Place a raw egg in a saucepan and cover with cold water.
  2. Cook on medium heat until boiling.
  3. Lower heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes for a soft boiled egg, 4-6 minutes for a medium boiled egg or 10-12 minutes for a hard boiled egg.
  4. Remove egg with a spoon and run cold water over it before peeling.

Keep in mind that that overcooking an egg can cause a green ring to appear around the yolk because of iron and sulfur content. This won’t affect the taste, but it will reduce the protein content.
