What is meant by Culinary Arts?

October 19, 2009 by Louise

Culinary art is simply the art of cooking – or the practice or manner of preparing food. The word culinary is defined as something related to, or connected with, cooking or kitchens, and a culinarian is a person working in the culinary arts – more commonly known as a cook or a chef.

Culinary artists must have a passion for cooking as they are responsible for skilfully preparing meals that are as pleasing to the palate as to the eye. Increasingly they are required to have a knowledge of the science of food and an understanding of diet and nutrition. They work primarily in restaurants, fast food chain store franchises, delicatessens, hospitals and other institutions.

Interest in culinary arts has flourished over recent years and is growing continually -not only in South Africa, but worldwide. This is probably due to lots of enthusiastic cooks realising they can make a living out of something they love doing, as well as passionate foodie lovers appreciating well-prepared, uniquely presented, mouth-watering dishes.
