Ficksburg in the Eastern Free State is known throughout the country as Cherry Town, and the Ficksburg Cherry Festival takes place during the third week in November. This is the longest running festival in South Africa and will celebrate its 42nd anniversary this year – from Thursday 19 November to Saturday 21 November.
Festival activities include cherry tours, a golf classic, a half marathon, cherry product competitions, veteran vehicle displays, equestrian events and beer fests. New exhibitions on the list include a food and wine fiesta. You can also enter the cherry pip-spitting contest or watch the ‘ready, steady, bake’ competition and the making of cherry mampoer – a South African moonshine.
Eat, drink and be cherry in the Free State!
