How to Choose the Culinary Arts School that is right for me

October 19, 2009 by Louise

Culinary art is a highly specialised field. When you join a culinary arts school or culinary arts college you will definitely obtain a certificate, but at the end of the day this does not mean that you will instantly be an excellent cook or chef. There are lots of different types of culinary training available, so consider the following factors before choosing a culinary arts school that is right for you.

  • If you browse through the internet, you will find a huge list of online culinary arts colleges. Not all of them will be genuine, so you need to know how to separate the wheat from the chaff and choose the culinary arts college that is most suitable for you and your culinary interests.
  • Keep in mind is that some culinary arts courses are significantly costlier. Hence choosing the wrong college could result in you losing a lot of money and getting nothing significant in return. So if you spend a considerable amount of time researching about the various culinary arts colleges before you pick one, it will definitely be worth the effort.

  • At the outset, you should decide on the high level that you wish to achieve in your culinary arts career. If you want to become a top chef sought by prestigious hotels and restaurants, then you should opt for a full four-year degree in a reputed culinary arts college instead of selecting an apprenticeship certificate or an associate degree.
  • If you plan to become a chef in a hospitality business house that runs a chain of restaurants, then your approach should be different. You should be prepared to relocate to the various places that the chain of restaurants will exist. If you approach the manager of the human resources department of that organisation, you will be able to get sufficient information about their expectations about the chefs that they employ and the culinary arts colleges that they prefer for hiring chefs for their restaurants. You could also talk to the chefs in these restaurants to find out their salary levels, working conditions and the attitude of the management towards their staff. This will help you select the right culinary arts college that will assist you in obtaining a career with that particular chain of restaurants.

Think carefully and analyse all the problems involved in becoming a chef before selecting your culinary arts college and entering the chef profession, and select a culinary arts school that is right for your needs and dreams – as this will ensure you have a bright and prospective culinary arts career in front of you.
