Why should I learn French before entering a Culinary Arts School?

December 15, 2009 by Louise

If you wish to pursue a culinary arts career and attend culinary arts schools or culinary arts colleges anywhere in the world, you should know the basic and common French words that are used in these schools and colleges for teaching culinary arts.

The insertion of French words into the English language might have made cooking terms slightly more complicated, but more descriptive all the same. With the dominance of French people in the area of fine cuisine, it is not so surprising that numerous terms have been included now in the language of cooking.

So, because French has become the international language of the kitchen, it’s advisable to learn conversational French before entering a culinary arts school, or at least make an effort to learn while you are training. French cooking terminology, simple grammar and vocabulary is essential, which means that a chef student will be able to converse on a simple level, write and compile a French menu and greet a customer in a hotel or restaurant and adequately assist them – by the time they graduate and enter the culinary arts world.

It will without doubt make it easier for you to have a certain knowledge of French before entering chef school. Because in any kitchen you’ll come across a lot of French words, which is why it is so important to be able to understand just what they mean.
